Worry-Free Sedation Dentistry

Are You :
Scared or anxious about visiting the dentist?
Delaying treatment you want and need because of fear?
Having trouble finding someone you trust?
Someone who has trouble with gagging or getting numb?
Overwhelmed by thoughts of repeated visits to the dentist?
If So:
You are not alone. Almost every patient is scared of visiting the dentist to some degree. Our goal is to create an atmosphere where you feel comfortable and provide service that builds trust. Some dental fears are easily comforted by nitrous gas. Other times patients prefer to use sedation dentistry to pursue their necessary treatment. We offer a few different options to help our patients get the smile that they deserve, without remembering much (or usually any) of the experience! Call us today to find out if you are a candidate for our fear-easing treatments!

What To Expect With Sedation Dentistry

Make your first appointment

This is a difficult step for many patients, so we make it as easy as possible. Our compassionate, welcoming, and affirming team members want to make your experience as smooth as possible because they understand your fears and hesitations. You’ll be comforted to know that many of our team have chosen oral conscious sedation for their own treatment!

A welcoming visit

We will gather information regarding your health and discuss your needs and desires. If you are comfortable, we will take x-rays and do an evaluation of your oral health. Dr. Watterson works with hundreds of fearful patients each year and will help you feel as relaxed as possible through your exam. You will never be judged or embarrassed.

Preparing for your sedation visit

After Dr. Watterson evaluates your medical history and your dental needs, he will customize a sedation plan for you. This may include taking a sedative the night before your appointment to ensure a good night’s sleep. It will also expedite the effectiveness of the medication you will take an hour before your appointment begins.

Arriving for treatment

It is imperative that you have a driver bring you to your appointment and take you home afterwards. Upon arrival, Dr. Watterson will evaluate if further medication is necessary to help achieve an appropriate level of comfort. Fortunately, oral conscious sedation medications have an amnesic effect. That means you will have very little, if any, memory of the sights, sounds or smells of your visit. Your experienced oral conscious sedation team will be by your side every step of the way, monitoring you throughout your entire visit.

Going home, smiling!

When your treatment is complete, you may feel a bit wobbly. So your companion will take you home and stay with you until you have fully recovered. You will be amazed at how much can be accomplished in such a seemingly short period of time, while you were totally relaxed, and completely comfortable.

The next day

The majority of oral conscious sedation patients feel no discomfort or residual effects from their visit. A member of our team will follow up with you to check in and answer any questions you might have.

Living with your new smile!

Our best advice is to prepare yourself for the compliments you will receive as you radiate confidence and joy with your new smile!

Care Instructions

Pain Management

Following surgical procedures there may, or may not, be discomfort – this is dependent on your threshold for pain. You will be provided with medication for discomfort that is appropriate for you. In most cases, a non-narcotic pain regimen will be given. This consists of acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Advil). Alternating these medications can be as effective as a narcotic, without the side effects associated with narcotics. If a narcotic has been prescribed, follow the directions carefully. Should you have any questions about these medications interacting with other prescriptions you are currently taking, PLEASE contact the office and/or your pharmacist prior to taking them.

The Watterson Way

Dr. Scott Watterson

Many people would define cosmetic dentistry by what they’ve seen on “extreme makeover” type shows. However, subtle changes can be just as effective at improving a smile, as well as someone’s confidence about smiling.

Many have the misconception that all cosmetic services are incredibly expensive or long, drawn out procedures, which discourages them from moving forward with what they truly want.

Dr. Watterson uses the most conservative treatment possible, while pursuing your maximum health and function. Our cosmetic care is specifically tailored to your needs, concerns, and how you want your smile to shine in the end.

Serving as a general dentist for 25 years, I have developed and curated a passion for cosmetic dentistry in all its facets. I believe that form follows function and that is the basis of my practice. When your teeth are able to function the way you need them to, beautiful form naturally follows.

My desire is for the work of my hands to reach beyond the individual to impact everyone who is graced with their smile.

IT'S A TRUST THING

Great staff! They make you feel like part of the family. If you dread the dentist due to concern of discomfort, you don’t have to worry if you are seen here. I have had the deep cleaning below the gum line, routine cleanings, and I am now receiving orthodontic treatment. I am very happy that I chose Dr. Watterson and staff.

Where does a dentist go when he needs work done in his own mouth? I go to my U of M Dental School classmate, Dr. Scott Watterson. Why? I can trust him (and you can too) to do what is proper and do it well. It doesn’t hurt either that he has a top-notch support team!
