Celebrating 20 Years!

Fall 1998 – Watterson Family Dentistry was established. A young and eager Dr. Scott Watterson had just graduated from the University of Michigan, School of Dentistry and was excited to start his practice. He purchased the practice of a retiring dentist and took over an office located on Prospect Street. The practice grew quickly in that location, and in November of 1999, Watterson Family Dentistry relocated to downtown Jackson. After a decade in the Jackson Professional Plaza building, there was need for another move, which is where Watterson Family Dentistry continues to serve the Jackson community today, at 1030 Laurence Avenue.

Fall 2018 – When asked about the past 20 years, Dr. Watterson had one overwhelming theme – his patient’s smiles are his greatest success. His mission has always been to see his skill sets extend beyond the reach of his own hands, to impact lives on a deeper and greater level. Testimonies from hundreds of people have expressed this very thing – changing their smile has changed their life.

We interviewed Dr. Watterson about his journey so far:

Q: What are 3 of the most notable/memorable things from the past 20 years?

A: “First would have to be the sheer awe of transformation. Dentistry plays a key role in overall health, but beyond that, a brilliant smile brings confidence that can’t be imitated. It’s been a wonderful journey transforming people’s lives by way of their smiles.

Second, has been my fascination with continued learning and being challenged to think differently. I’ve taken the time and initiative to continue my education over the past 20 years, in order to be a highly skilled and highly trusted dentist for Jackson.

Finally, technological advancements. There are constantly new ways to provide better care with more comfort, including digital imaging, 3D x-rays, 3D “printing of teeth,” sedation techniques, and that is what we strive for.”

Q: What are 3 things you are hopeful for in your next 20 years of practice?

A: “1. Stamina – it’s a “down in the mouth” world of dentistry!

2. Continue developing people around me to love what we do and how we do it.

3. Being able to share my journey and experience with others to inspire them to be better – those we serve, those serving beside me, and other dentists and teams as well.”

Q: How have you seen your mission change or solidify during these 2 decades?

A: “I believe my mission has remained the same over the course of my career – to serve people with excellence. As time has passed, and I have gained some maturity, the expression of this mission has grown and been refined.”

Q: Any other thoughts on reaching 20 years in private practice that you would like to share with our patients and the community?

A: “I am unbelievably amazed at how fast 20 years have passed. I remember my first day of orientation at the University of Michigan – I must have been in diapers still! I am thankful I love my work and consider it a hobby. I hope that shows in how I pursue creating a valuable experience for those we serve, building our team, and caring for those closest to me. It was a childhood dream to be a dentist – following in my father’s footsteps; and to see all that has happened in the last 20 years, it is incredible to be enjoying it this much. I have been blessed by so many people and am very appreciative.”
